  • What is Vancouver's biking target?

    Meeting Date:

Staff Presentation on Transportation: Comparing biking target of Vancouver to European cities

Thanks very much. Good questions asked by fellow counselors to follow up on one of councilor Joe's questions. Around the targets around, around cycling.

What is our target? I mean, you know what? It went to 9%, but ultimately I'm sort of thinking of cities in Europe.

Yeah, they're flatter, but we've got electric bikes and Amsterdam, Copenhagen, they're at 50% or more. So what is our target ultimately?

  • How we can increase bike users to reach our target based on demographics?

    Meeting Date:

Staff Presentation on Transportation: Targeting youth and kids to use bikes via offering free bikes or cycling education to increase bike users

I just think there's, do you think that there are particular demographics that relate to that? And I'm seeing more youth, for example, cycling and more senior people taking the bus, for example, or taking transit. So are we considering that kind of targeting?

And that would mean potentially targeting school age kids in terms of getting them involved in cycling, not just by having the routs, but cycling education. Can we get somebody should donate free bikes to people, you know, kids who need them. I don't know.

I'm just curious, like how do we get that mode shift to go up?

  • Carr supports an amendment to add an active transportation lane

    Meeting Date:

Motion to protect people on Cornwall Avenue

There is one piece of the amendment that I will support, and that is the final piece around the consideration of active transportation lane or lanes on Cornwall Avenue. As it was stated I had previously voted, well actually I didn't get the chance to vote, I had to vote against the York Avenue route because I was supportive of the Cornwall Avenue route. But that was in 2013, so this issue has been going on for a fair bit of time and I wish that that particular decision had been in line with what I had wanted and what a lot of people who have come forward, like Richard who spoke today had wanted. It would have been a safer street all the way along and maybe avoided some really terrible accidents.
