HUB Cycling: Burnaby Local Committee

The Burnaby Local Committee is a volunteer group advocating for safer, more accessible cycling and active transportation in our city. We work with city staff and officials, provincial authorities and other community organizations to push for better infrastructure and to get more people biking and using active travel. We also host events and social rides to celebrate biking and build community across Burnaby.Group of people on bikes standing on a quiet street with cherry blossom tree in background

What do Local Committees Do?

HUB Local Committees are at the heart of HUB's advocacy efforts. Made up of people who live, work, bike, walk, and vote in their communities, committee members bring valuable lived experience to the table. They're in the best position to speak up and push for safety improvements where they matter most. Here are some of the things our committees do:

  • Writing letters to decision-makers
  • Providing feedback on future transportation projects
  • Meeting with politicians, planners, and engineers
  • Organizing rides to assess cycling conditions
  • Hosting community events and building local alliances
  • Local Committees are the backbone of HUB Cycling’s advocacy, and the work they do has already led to major improvements across the region.

Visit the Committee Wiki pages to see examples of past letters sent to decision makers, committee assessment bike ride infrastructure reports and past meeting minutes.

What are the benefits of joining a Local Committee?

When you join a Local Committee, you get the chance to:

  • Work directly with municipal staff, elected officials and community organization,
  • Help solve local road and sidewalk problems and learn how they affect local communities ,
  • Build leadership skills and grow your confidence in advocacy and teamwork,
  • Expand your network by connecting with new people who share your passion ,
  • Help improve the livability and safety of neighborhoods.

Everyone is welcome—no experience needed!

The committee is looking to fill the following positions:

  • Co-Chair
  • Assessment Ride Leader
  • Events Coordinator
  • Community Liaison

Please see the Committee Roles and Responsibilities document to see descriptions of roles. Send an email to burnaby@bikehub.ca if you would like to help and take one of these roles!

HUB Cycling views the diversity of our members and communities as assets and strive to create and sustain a diverse and culturally competent organization that reflects the populations we serve. This is central to our mission, “to get more people cycling more often” and to our ongoing efforts to remove barriers to cycling.

2024 Committee Highlights

  • Assessing bike infrastructure in Burnaby including producing and submitting three detailed reports and seven letters/emails to city staff and city council directly influencing key bikeway upgrades.

  • Celebrating the following infrastructure upgrades in Burnaby for 2024 including:
    • Traffic calming measures in the Edmonds Town Centre and an upgrade to the bike network in the area, including two separated bike lanes (Southpoint Dr. and 18th Ave).
    • Paving a section of the Central Valley Greenway (CVG)
    • Construction on Gilmore Ave included a short section of new Multi Use Path (MUP) filling a critical gap.
    • Removal of two slip lanes at Gilmore & Lougheed and Gilmore & Dawson
    • New MUP on Alpha Avenue.

2025 Committee Objectives

Objective One: Continue Strong Assessment Ride Report and Feedback Precedence

Benefits:
By maintaining our strong precedence we can continue to assess infrastructure and provide feedback to relevant parties. Keeping our audience and our desired outcome in mind can keep feedback size and complexity in check. Saving us time from creating a larger and unwieldy ride report that may be unnecessary. Attending open houses after assessing smaller changes provides opportunities to exchange ideas directly with decision makers.

Objective Two: Continue Good Working Relationship with Collaborators

Benefits: Maintains and fosters current positive outlook and perception of the Burnaby Local Committee.

Objective Three: Establish and Maintain Perpetual List of Priorities

Benefits: Provides more structure and direction to our actions.

Burnaby Cycling Maps and Resources

City of Burnaby and TransLink have created maps of the cycling networks in Burnaby to help all cyclists navigate safely and comfortably on their bikes. These maps are updated regularly to provide current information on cycling and show the comfort levels of each route based on how separated it is from traffic. PDF versions of the maps for Burnaby are available at the links below.  Cycling maps for other Metro Vancouver municipalities are available at bikehub.ca/maps.

HUB Cycling also has an extensive list of resources to support you on your active transportation journey!
